NECS 2011: Fun around London Town

This year’s European Network of Cinema Studies (NECS) conference -my first- was great fun, taking place at three (!) college campuses around central London: King’s College, Birkbeck, and Regent’s College. As much walking as this entailed, it was good to see more of the city than tends to happen at most such large-scale conferences, and it was fun to figure out how to get from one place to the next. My own Saturday morning panel went well, although my paper on Synecdoche, New York was less engaged with urban studies than the others. It did however also draw some fans of the film I chatted happily with afterwards. The whole experience was mostly a lark anyhow, as hardly any of the mostly film-oriented papers had much bearing on my own work. But I got to meet and hang out with a lot of cool people, catch up with some old friends, and enjoy the nightlife of a great city.
